API Credentials for Datawrapper
Guide to obtaining tokens, keys, and connections.
To interact with the Datawrapper API you only need one piece of information: your Access Token. This token is a personal key that authenticates all your requests (creating, editing, or publishing charts). Below you’ll find a step‑by‑step guide to generate this token from your user dashboard.
Access Token
-
1
Go to https://app.datawrapper.de and log in to your account. If you don’t have one yet, sign up for free with your email and password.
-
2
From the Dashboard, click your name or avatar (usually in the top‑right corner) and choose “Settings” or “Account settings.”
-
3
Inside Settings, scroll to the “API Access Tokens” section and click “Create new access token.”
-
4
Give the token a name that helps you remember its purpose (e.g., “Botize”) and tick the permissions you need. To create and publish charts, select at least “chart:read” and “chart:write.”
-
5
Click “Create” or “Generate.” Datawrapper will display the token **only once**. Copy the entire string (a long sequence of letters and numbers) and store it safely.
