How is this different from a normal URL shortener?

Besides shortening, it creates a deep link: tapped on a phone, it opens the destination's app instead of the web page.

That changes the outcome when you share links inside another app — a Telegram channel, a WhatsApp group, a Facebook post — because those apps open what you tap in their embedded browser, where people are usually signed out. With a normal shortener that behaviour is inherited as is: the link is shorter, but it opens in the same place.
