“This tool is not on this connection”: the tool isn't in your MCP

Symptom

Your assistant tells you Botize answered with an error like one of these:

This tool is not on this connection. The tool list changed after your client read it.
Tool 'tool_name' is not available on this connection.

Or, in its own words, that it "doesn't have access to that tool" or that "the tool doesn't exist".

Why it happens

Your assistant called a tool by a name that isn't in the MCP it's connected to. There are three possible reasons:

  1. Its tool list is out of date: it's using an old name, or it doesn't see a new tool.
  2. The tool was never approved in this MCP: it asked for it but the request is still pending or was rejected, or you approved it in a different MCP.
  3. It's connected to a different MCP than you thought, for example a new, empty one created when connecting again.

When the reason is the first one, Botize sends your assistant the real tool list in the same error message, so it can correct itself. Some assistants make use of it and others don't.

How to fix it

  1. Refresh the tool list in your assistant: how to do it in each one.
  2. Check the MCP in MCP connections: the one your assistant uses must have the tool. If it doesn't, ask your assistant to request it and approve it.
  3. If it's connected to the wrong MCP, connect again and pick the right one at Which MCP do you want to connect?. How
